I often interact with several patients who are a part of my online program and give them personalised consultations and guide them regarding the problems that they are facing in their pregnancy journey. I also practice at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. These experiences together have helped me understand and know some of the most common queries, issues and concerns that modern couples are facing when they are trying to start their family and conceive a baby. I also believe that we can all learn from each other's journey as well as experiences, and hence, I document interactions with several of my patients so that others can learn from these documentations as well. One such case has been shared by me below.
"Should I get my eggs frozen if I have low AMH? I want to know if it is possible to conceive naturally after getting the eggs and embryo frozen? Also, what lifestyle changes should I make to try to conceive naturally?"
The patient had shared her background and test reports with me. Her age was 34 years old and was planning to start trying for a child soon. She also shared with me that she had been suggested that she should get her embryo frozen as she had lower egg count and would like to have a second child as well in the future. She had low AMH level (0.3) and her FSH level was 17. She wanted to know if they can still try to conceive naturally.
"The egg quality can definitely be improve if you have a good balanced, healthy diet. Now, what will that include? If you have green leafy vegetables, if you have more of fruits, if you'll cut down on your smoking, alcohol and caffeine. You can also take methi (fenugreek) seeds, ginger, blueberries, strawberries, garlic, good exercise, stress reduction, etc. All these things will really help you in improving your egg, quality. Also, increase the quantity of nuts that you're having. You have to have nuts every day. Soak it in water overnight and have it in the morning. These will really help you improve your egg quality as well as the ovarian environment. So include all these in your diet.
Now, even with low AMH, I've seen very good conception rates. All you need is one good egg to conceive. What AMH essentially means is that your ovarian reserve is low. Which means that the amount of eggs that your ovaries are capable of producing is low. That does not mean that it'll not produce one good, healthy egg. However, the FSH level being high, even after you conceive, may predispose to having a miscarriage later on, that is a possibility. Having said that, we cannot say for certain just based on these hormonal reports, because you haven't really tried for conception yet. For next six months, I would advise you to try naturally. After that, I would not recommend to delay your conception any further, because after the age of 35, you don't want other problems with the babies, such as down syndrome and all of the other such possibilities that increase post the age of 35. So, I would like you to conceive before you turn 35 and for the next three to six months, try to conceive naturally in your best fertility periods, try to follow the lifestyle modifications which I have recommended. And then, even after that six months period, if you've not conceived, then I would say, go for assisted reproduction. There's no problem with that."
