Tracking ovulation is one of the most important prerequisites for natural conception.
The ovaries have follicles, also called potential eggs. The proper growth of at least 1 follicle every cycle and its release is called ovulation. There are several ways of assessing ovulation.
The surest way to track ovulation and egg release is by ultrasound.
A TVS or transvaginal scan for follicle monitoring done serially from day 2 or 3 of your period enables tracking the follicles and noting ovulation. This scan is recommended every few days based on the size of the follicles and their growth rate. So you may typically need to get it done 4 to 7 times every cycle, starting from the 2nd or 3rd day of your period, till around day 16 to 20 of your period, till ovulation is seen. This scan can be done at any time during the day. Fasting is not needed for it.
You can also track ovulation by using an ovulation test kit in the privacy of your home.
These detect the rise of a hormone in the woman’s urine called LH a few hours before ovulation. Collect the urine sample in a clean container. Pour a few drops on the test strip. If you get 1 line, it means there is no LH surge, meaning ovulation has either not occurred or it has already happened. If you get 2 lines, it means an LH surge is expected. You are likely to ovulate in the next 24 hours.
Another way to track ovulation is to use an online ovulation tracker.
While this may not give you the exact precision which an ultrasound will give, it will give you a good range of the days you are ovulating. Having intercourse every alternate day during the ovulation window is recommended to improve your chances to conceive.
I have designed an online ovulation tracker for Team Zoe. You can use it every month and have intercourse during those days to boost your chances. A healthy couple in their 30's has about 86% chance to conceive in 12 months. So don't get disheartened if you don't conceive in the first 3-6 months.
As we had explained in the article how babies are made the secret ingredient to any successful pregnancy is ENERGY. So don't take stress, be positive, workout everyday, focus on your nutrition, track your ovulation, be supportive and you will be parents soon.
Tracking ovulation when your periods are irregular.
I had done a live session with Team Zoe where I had talked about irregular periods. You can watch the video here:
What are regular periods and what are irregular periods?
If you are getting your periods anytime between 21 to 35 days, it is completely normal. Your periods are regular. Only if you are periods are coming in less than 21 days or more than 35 days, can we say that your periods are irregular.
Why do irregular periods happen? Some of the causes of irregular periods are physiological. Supposing you have an exam, you are stressed, you can irregular periods. Or you have been traveling and your diet & sleep patterns have changed, your hormones may go up and down, and you may have irregular periods.
Other causes of irregular periods are organic and more deep rooted. If there is a thyroid dysfunction, if there is hypothyroid or hyperthyroidism then there can be irregular periods. If you have PCOS, serum prolactin or hormonal disturbances, endometriosis, fibroids, all of these may lead to irregular periods.
How to manage irregular periods? One of the most important things you can do to manage irregular periods is lifestyle modification. Managing your stress, sleep, improving your nutrition, working out daily, managing your weight to be in the ideal weight range, giving up on smoking, alcohol and caffeine can go a long way to help you manage irregular periods. Team Zoe and I have designed an amazing online program that helps you focus on your lifestyle correction and conceive effortlessly.
How to track ovulation with irregular periods? As I had mentioned the sure-shot way to track ovulation is through an ultrasound. But this might be expensive. Another way to do it is by studying your cervical mucus. You are ovulating when the cervical mucus becomes clear or slippery, resembling egg whites.
When to have intercourse if you have irregular periods to boost your chances of conception? Normally it is recommended to have intercourse every alternate day during the ovulation window if you have regular periods. But irregular periods means irregular ovulation and you don't want to miss out on your fertile window. So I would recommend, have intercourse every 2-3 days, and focus on lifestyle correction to manage irregular periods.
